eScript for GPs
Clanwilliam Health has made eScript available on all of their GP practice management systems (Helix Practice Manager, Health One and Socrates). eScript has been incorporated into these prescribing systems so it’s as simple and easy as possible to offer this service to your patients with little disruption to your workflow.

- How will the eScript service work?
Within your practice management system, at the point of prescribing you will be presented with “send electronically” button as well as your standard print button. You will then be prompted to ask your patient if s/he wishes to avail of the eScript service. If your patient says yes, you will then be presented with a list and interactive map of pharmacies which are switched on to eScript within a 20mile radius of your practice. Your patient can then select the pharmacy of their choice.
- Does my patient have to sign-up somewhere?
No, at the point of prescribing you can ask your patient if they wish to use the eScript service. Consent can be verbal allowing you to simply tick a box within your prescribing system.
- How do I introduce the service to my patients?
You will be supplied with patient leaflets and posters which will explain eScript for your patients. If they have not seen this you can simply ask them would they like to avail of the eScript and explain how the service works. - Will my patient still need a paper prescription?
Yes. Make sure to remind your patient that the eScript is just a notification and the pharmacist still needs the legal entity that is the signed prescription.
- What are the benefits to GPs?
By using eScript you will find you spend less time talking to pharmacists about patient prescriptions. The pharmacy system will also send back information about the status of the eScript whether pending or dispensed. You will also be delivering a more enhanced patient journey.
- What are the benefits to my patients?
Your patients will benefit from an improved and more modern patient journey and assurance that you are you the latest in technology to improve patient safety.
- How does my patient choose a pharmacy?
eScript in your system will offer you a list and interactive map of pharmacies which are switched on to eScript in a 20mile radius of your practice. Once your patient has chosen the pharmacy most convenient to them, you can then select it within your pharmacy system.
- Can my patient change their chosen pharmacy?
Yes, your patient can change their selected pharmacy at any stage. Whether it’s immediately after they step out of your practice or the next time they decide to pick a different pharmacy. The choice is always theirs!
- Does this service change my obligations under the data protection policy?
No, while this service will change the manner in which information is shared between GPs and Pharmacists, the information shared will not change (with the exception of your patient’s mobile number). Therefore your current data protection practices are sufficient to ensure compliance with the DP Acts.
